The painful cycle of living with an eating disorder

Unhealthy relationship with food

The biggest commonality among all eating disorders is an unhealthy relationship with food. Whether you eat too much or too little, are afraid of certain food, or refuse to eat anything you don’t deem “safe,” these rules and restrictions significantly affect your life. They don’t just impact your health but also your broader social life and general wellbeing.

Fixation on body image

Most (but not all) EDs fixate on body image. It’s not uncommon to have a warped perception of your own body or what you think it should look like. This fixation can dominate your thoughts, preventing you from meaningfully engaging in daily life. Living like this gets exhausting and is not sustainable.

Intense anxiety or fear

Disordered eating is driven by a combination of fear and desire for control. That’s why so many EDs involve intricate and specific rules – following the rules gives a sense of control but, in reality, they come from fear of what happens if the rules aren’t followed. This is often why dietitians refer to eating disorders as a voice in your head.

Health issues

All eating disorders present a danger to your health, both mentally and physically. Your skin, hormones, heart, and more can all suffer as a result. You may struggle with hair loss, low body temperature, heart palpitations, dizziness or fainting, teeth problems, gastrointestinal issues, and more. If left untreated, eating disorders can lead to long-term health issues and even death.

Frequently asked questions

All about eating disorders

What are the symptoms of an eating disorder?

There are many different kinds of eating disorders and symptoms vary by type. These are some symptoms that apply to many but not all EDs:

  • Extreme weight loss or fluctuating weight
  • Avoiding eating with others
  • Feeling out of control around food (or controlled by it)
  • Poor body image and self-worth
  • Fearing or avoiding certain foods
  • Abusing diet pills or laxatives
  • Missing period

What are the different types of eating disorders?

While most eating disorders fixate on weight and/or body image, not all do. The different types of eating disorders include:

  • Anorexia nervosa: Anorexia typically involves extreme weight loss and a warped sense of weight and body image. Those with anorexia usually restrict their food intake and take drastic measures to lose weight.
  • Bulimia nervosa: Bulimia is a subset of anorexia. Those with bulimia binge on large amounts of food then purge and are usually in a near-normal weight range.
  • Binge eating disorder (BED): BED is similar to bulimia without purging. Those with BED eat large quantities of food in a short time period (up to three hours) and feel out of control, like they can’t stop eating even if they want to.
  • Other specified feeding and eating disorder (OSFED): Previously referred to as “eating disorder not otherwise specified” (EDNOS), OFSED is characterized by symptoms of other eating disorders but at a different frequency. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed EDs due to its generalized nature.
  • Orthorexia: Orthorexia revolves around a fixation over “clean” or healthy eating. Those with orthorexia have strict rules about what they can and can’t eat and may feel distressed when they are unable to follow those rules.
  • Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID): ARFID is one eating disorder that has nothing to do with body image or weight but instead a fear of consequences of eating, such as choking or vomiting. It can also be fueled by an aversion to certain textures, tastes, or smells.

What are the causes of eating disorders?

Eating disorders can develop at any time for anyone. They are usually fueled by a variety of factors, including social expectations, psychological issues or trauma, and more. Those with a family history of disordered eating are much likelier to develop an eating disorder. It is common for young girls to develop EDs in puberty, but again, they can happen at any time to people of any gender, race, or age.

How are eating disorders diagnosed?

Eating disorders can be diagnosed by a registered dietitian or medical provider. The provider will ask about your eating habits, mindset around food, and more to assess if you meet the qualifications of a particular diagnosis. You may be assessed by both a physician and a mental health provider.

How dietitians treat eating disorders

Your RD will start by assessing any potential nutrient deficiencies. It is common for those with EDs to be lacking vital nutrients due to poor diet. They will then create a custom plan based on your specific symptoms and medical history. They will also address the psychological component of disordered eating, using tools from cognitive behavioral therapy to help you develop a healthier relationship with food.
