Background

I have been a registered dietitian since 2020. I received a Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics in 2019. I am currently working towards a doctorate degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise from Virginia Tech. Although I currently work in research, I continue to hold providing quality nutrition care to clients and patients as a top priority.

Why did I become a dietitian? I, like many others, have experienced health issues I thought could only be improved with medications and other medical interventions. I was wrong and realized as a young soccer player, struggling to perform at a top level, that food can be medicine.

Many individuals struggle with health issues, and I would like to be a solution from a dietary perspective. Client and patient populations I work with include diabetes, CKD, weight management, celiac disease, athletes, and those seeking to improve their overall health. This is not a complete list, so do not hesitate to reach out to determine if we can work together. If I feel I cannot provide the highest quality of care, I will reach out to colleagues that have the knowledge and expertise I may not have.

As a client or patient, you can expect appointments to be an open conversion. I am not the “food police”, and you will not be judged for your diet pattern. I will work with your food preferences as best as possible, but we all know if you are seeking help from a dietitian, you will need to modify your habits to some degree. Expect to discuss topics you may not think are related to your diet. Topics such as stress, exercise, and sleep quality may become a part of our conversations.

A frequent question I receive is, will I try and force a detailed diet plan on a client or patient? No, I do not like to create complete diet plans, although if that is desired we can. I prefer you as a client or patient to feel you can manage your own meal plan after a few key goals are set. Will I ever vilify a food? No, I believe most foods can fit into a quality diet unless you have a specific disease state, the food interacts with a medication, or you dislike the food completely.

What do I expect from my clients and patients? I expect an open and honest conversation. I cannot help or maximize a nutrition intervention if I do not know the full picture. I also expect a certain level commitment and motivation. I will work with clients and patients to set individualized goals, and I expect a commitment to those goals. I understand that motivations and goals will change. If goals need to be modified, they will change to better facilitate progress towards overall health and other desired outcomes. Do not expect appointments to be all business. I like to keep conversations fun, open, and free flowing. The more questions the better!

When leaving an appointment, I hope you as a client or patient feel empowered, understood, heard, and you know I care as much as you do!
