My passion for the field of dietetics is fueled by my seemingly greater than life energy gifted by a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as an unyielding desire to help others live the most vibrant version of self. As a young child I was overweight, upon changing my dietary intake and lifestyle I noticed the excess weight coming off, my energy rising, and I also noticed the association between habits and health. As I became athletic I needed to learn healthy habits to support my desired athletic performance. Although I struggled with some disordered eating, it was a good learning opportunity and part of my path so that I can be more helpful to others as a dietitian. I conquered and grew. Upon graduating with a B.S. in Nutrition and Food Science, tragedy hit. I lost my father to heart disease and cancer. This catapulted my desire to help others deal with medical issues from a nutritional perspective. After learning meditation to deal with the stress and sorrows of loss, I went to graduate school and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Dietetics. In graduate school I was selected from my class and hired to work in Nutrition Research with pregnant & lactating women and as an outpatient Dietitian-Nutritionist in the Endocrinology Department. I specialized in disorders of Lipid Metabolism such as heart disease and stroke and also counseling on the topic of Diabetes most commonly. In addition to training in western medicine I also earned a Master of Yoga Certification and studied with a Chinese Medicine Doctor to open my mind to a holistic approach to health. Although I instructed on the topic of weight management throughout my career, I experienced it first hand again after the birth of my children. Losing 40# was an accomplishment. As is getting children to eat a well balanced diet and fostering their intrinsic desire to be healthy. Pediatric dietetics is an area that I’ve researched for the last six years. Over the years I’ve worked in the clinical nutrition setting (counseling on a myriad of disease states), in hospital nutrition management, teaching nutrition at the college level and in outpatient dietetics. Throughout my career in dietetics, I’ve found that talking to patients and clients is where I feel most helpful. I strive to promote wellness, ease discomfort and help spread the joys and longevity associated with the nutritional wellness.
