Background

As a young girl growing up in a tight-knit Dominican community, I witnessed firsthand the struggles that many families faced with managing chronic diseases like diabetes. In my own family, diabetes was a constant presence, affecting both my grandparents and several aunts and uncles. Despite their efforts to follow the dietary advice provided by healthcare professionals, it often seemed like an uphill battle.

I remember the frustration and confusion that permeated our household as we tried to navigate the complexities of managing diabetes while still honoring our cultural traditions. The information we received from healthcare providers seemed detached from our reality, with little consideration for the foods we cherished and the cultural practices that shaped our meals.

As I grew older, my desire to make a difference in my community deepened. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, but it wasn't until I discovered the field of dietetics that I found my true calling. Becoming a Registered Dietitian became more than just a profession to me; it became a mission to bridge the gap between conventional dietary advice and the rich tapestry of our culinary heritage.

Throughout my journey to become a registered dietitian, I immersed myself in learning about the unique nutritional needs and cultural nuances of the community. I sought out mentors who shared my passion for culturally sensitive healthcare and eagerly absorbed everything I could about traditional foods and their impact on health.

But it was a personal experience that truly solidified my commitment to serving the community. One day, while visiting my grandmother in the hospital after yet another diabetes-related complication, I realized that there had to be a better way. I vowed to become the kind of healthcare professional who could provide practical, culturally relevant guidance to families like mine who were struggling to manage chronic diseases.

I work tirelessly to develop educational materials and resources that honor our cultural heritage while promoting health and well-being. Through my work, I've had the privilege of walking alongside families as they navigate their health journeys, offering support, guidance, and most importantly, understanding. I've seen the profound impact that culturally sensitive care can have, empowering individuals to take control of their health in a way that feels authentic and sustainable.

When I am not fighting for equitable nutrition in our community, you can find me on a beach or baseball diamond with my husband and two sons.
